Nine Days is a rare movie to come out in theaters and instantly demands a Criterion Collection release as soon as possible. This movie focuses on a group of “humans” going through an obstacle course to see who is worthy on living out the rest of their lives on Earth.
Winston Duke had his breakthrough performance in Black Panther then followed it up with Jordan Peele’s US. Now he has a meaty role that will shake you for days how relentless and soft spoken he is with all of his guests I guess you could call them. As he treats them like a rat in a maze finding the cheese at the end of it.
Zazie Beetz from Deadpool 2 and Joker fame gives a very subtle powerful performance here as Emma and her and Duke’s chemistry stands out through the film. There is another stand out performance from Tony Hale from Arrested Development and Veep, playing someone cynical for a change, which is nice seeing him crush that role.
For the rest of the ensemble, Benedict Wong and Bill Skarsgard are perfectly cast in their respective roles, however, it is not anything we have not seen from them before so it won’t change your mind on them as far as acting chops go.
The main problem with this film will be its pacing will keep it from finding a big audience as for a lot of people I know slow pacing is a turn off and for that Nine Days will not breakthrough like it should.
