Black Box is an excellent psychological thriller movie, that’s part of the four movies of this years Welcome To The Blumhouse for Amazon Prime. I’m afraid a lot of Blumhouse’s fandom will not like these films, however, since they’re very wary of films he produces for streaming and if you’re not a fan of his Hulu horror anthology Into The Dark, which I think are generally great flicks. The Welcome To The Blumhouse anthologies won’t persuade you to be a fan of these streaming titles.
Especially if you didn’t like his previous psychological thrillers like The Invisible Man and Get Out then you’re not going to be a fan of Black Box even though I loved those two Blumhouse films and think that they’re some of his best work along with Whiplash and BlacKkKlansman.

Director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour is able to create a really intriguing science fiction atmosphere with Black Box, Mamoudou Athie gives a really strong performance as the lead actor and could have himself a breakthrough performance here. The supporting cast is also very strong. A few big problems I have with Black Box are the pacing and editing. Overall it’s a decent entry for Blumhouse’s streaming titles.
Overall grade: 2.5/5 stars
