Do you dare say his name? We now have the first trailer for Jordan Peele’s Candyman. To be honest, it had more of a Nightmare on Elm Street vibe to me. Even though I’m willing to give this one a shot with an open mind since the original sequels were not that great.
Nia DaCosta(Little Woods) directs this new version of Clive Barker’s classic urban legend tale. Which is being described as a ”spiritual sequel” to Bernard Roses’ underrated classic. The thing I love about the original Bernard version is that it didn’t just scare with you gore but also had a fantastic supernatural undertow to it and also scared you with ideas.
We shall see if Nia DaCosta’s take can have the same impact, even though she doesn’t have to compete with Roses’ version and tell us a completely relevant tale amongst today’s time.
Based on Clive Barker’s 1985 short story “The Forbidden” A “spiritual sequel” to the first film, this new Candyman returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Candyman is set to hit theaters on June 12th, 2020.
