When the original Gremlins was released in 1984, I was all of five years old. My mother was fond of horror movies and permitted me to watch films of the genre in her company.
It is for that reason, I believe, that the film has always had a special place in my heart. I fell in love with the cute little Mogwai from the very start.
I was actually devastated when I learned that it was not a real creature and that we could only purchase replicas. I recall crying, as in blubbering, when I first learned of this.
Before hand, I had sworn to my parents that if they gave me one, I would make sure that I didn’t put my fluffy friend in the bright light or feed him after midnight. I liked Spike’s attitude – and that of his gremlin friends as mischievous as hey were – but I was hell bent on keeping my little buddy nice and adorable.
Fast forward some 35 years later, and it is rumored that a Gremlins 3 is in the work and that a new script has recently been completed. While I yearn for a proper entry into the series, I am always skeptical of new additions to great franchises (see what happened to the newest Ghostbusters).
It is with great relief, however, that Chris Columbus – the movie’s original writer has said that the newest incantation will not be a remake or reboot, but a telling of events that occurred thirty plus years after the second film.
I am now on board and eager to see what the havoc-wreaking Gremlins have in store for us all!
Mogwai’ but sells it to him with the warning to never expose.
