After the unexpected success of Sony Pictures’ VENOM, a sequel is currently in the works. Kelly Marcel, one of the screenwriters from the first film, has been tapped to write the script for the antihero’s second film.
Marcel was best known for adapting another box office success, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. And she currently has a list of films in some type of development for other studios, including an Elvis biopic and Disney’s CRUELLA.
The sequel to VENOM will see Tom Hardy return as the antihero symbiote, and expected to return is Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson, who will portray Carnage. A director for the film has not been set at this time. Reuben Fleischer helmed the first film and is currently busy with the sequel to Sony’s ZOMBIELAND. Avi Arad, and Amy Pascal will return as producers along with Kelly Marcel as an executive producer.
I think it’s fair to say, we all saw this one coming, but did any of us “really” expect to see VENOM be a box office hit??! The film managed to gross $855 million worldwide and is the first film to kickoff Sony’s Spidey-less SpiderVerse. Let’s hope the sequel can do the same or even better this time around.
No release date is currently set but the studio managed to secure “an untitled Marvel sequel” for October 2020. It’s safe to assume that date would be for VENOM 2, giving it the same release date as the first film.
