If the Syfy channel aimed to gain the rights to two cult classics, namely the Chiodo brothers’ Killer Klowns From Outer Space and Stephen Herek’s Critters, ten-to-fifteen years ago it may have been appealing.
After all, at one point in time, Syfy (née the Sci-Fi channel) was held to a pretty high esteem for science fiction shows and feature length films. Their movies were low budget but the quality of the films were not.
Over time, however, the production quality of Syfy originals have dove tailed. In addition, the movies that are slated to be shown on the channel constantly are those sci-fi films that either bombed at the box office or never made it to the big screen.
As a fan of both Klowns and Kritters for their campy entertainment, I really have been one of the many fans clamoring for the sequel of Klowns and for another installment of Kritters. It is quite possible, however, that if Syfy gains the rights for production of future films, movies many people desire to be made will be extremely disappointing.
It has also been rumored that the rights to the movies would only be the channel’s attempt of airing the already existing films.
This is something that not only do I support, I whole heartedly back. Freeform has Hocus Pocus marathons. AMC has Halloween marathons. Why not allow for Syfy to have Killer Klowns from Outer Space marathons.
While the news is relatively recent, stay tuned and keep following us at Infamous Horror to see just how this whole thing plays out.
