Thirty years ago on July 13, 1987, Metal Gear was released for the NES.
Now thirty years later, we have a film on the horizon. The franchise itself has plenty of material to adapt from, spin-off’s, prequels, alternate universes etc. Fans of the franchise should be in for a treat.
However, there is a flip side to that coin. Film adaptations haven’t always been well received by critics. With the addition of fans damning the films to Oblivion and so on. Metal Gear could be an exception. It has plenty of genres that it could grab from whether its a western, sci-fi, horror, romance, thriller etc.
Word through the grapevine is that the director of the project, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, is creating an original story within the skeleton of the series’ world. It’s not particularly being adapting from any of the stories within the established canon. It’s good to know that the creator and mastermind behind the series, Hideo Kojima will be working with Roberts as a creative consultant. Kojima has told Roberts “Do what I would do and betray the audience”.
Kojima is known to throw fans through loops throughout the franchise so I wouldn’t expect anything less. There isn’t a release date but Roberts has been sharing concept art for the project via Twitter. Rumors have circulated for years that Christian Bale would be set to play hero and protagonist of the series, Solid Snake . Only time will tell.
