Ghostbusters. Independence Day. Even Hocus Pocus. These are just a few movie franchises with a cult following that have had (or will have) a sequel or complete overhaul over the last few years.
Fans of “Killer Klowns From Outer Space” have been clamoring 30 years for a sequel. It is about time that the Chiodo brothers get the second installment out of development purgatory.
The Killer Klowns franchise is in a unique situation which works to it’s benefit. Unlike many other films that have received new versions recently, the original movie did not rely on it’s cast of characters, northeir character development, to create a memorable story.
Many films that have been redone have suffered backlash since fans of the franchises were in love with the characters on screen.
However, this will not be the case of Killer Klowns. Mike and Debbie may have been the film’s protagonists, but the Klowns and their antagonistic behaviors is what truly drove the film. Thirty years later, many people simply want to see these lumbering, hostile, and humorous villains return to the screen.
Fans of the franchise are not desperate for a deep love story, or elegant dialogue. Cotton candy cocoons. Swirly straws for slurping blood. Popcorn that turns into a hybrid of snapping venus fly trap and klown. Ice cream sundaes that melt humans. The use of human muscles to create marionette dolls. Hand shadows that swallow people whole.
These are the things the fandom wants.
After following the rumors of a pending sequel for years, these are the things the cult following deserves.
