Another franchise will be the trend of ignoring all sequels and be a direct follow up to the original.
This year David Gordon Green and Danny McBride did that with Halloween and now we are seeing that Niell Blomkamp is doing the same with Robocop. I’m excited the District 9 director is taking over the directors chair on this franchise after his efforts with Alien fell apart.
Returns will be based on an old spec script that the first film’s writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner wrote shortly after the original’s release. (They’re returning to produce and executive produce the new movie.)
Due to the 1988 writer’s strike, that screenplay wasn’t used and the studio brought in a young Frank Miller of comics fame to craft a new one. But the delay also means the next RoboCop will be directed by someone who grew up with the original. When we find out more information regarding casting and synopsis we will let you all know here.
