It seems as if Sony is following through with their planned “Spider-Verse” and continuing with spinoffs of popular Spiderman villains and allies.
Sony is releasing Tom Hardy’s “VENOM” this October and other films are in various stages of development including a film featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat and one based on Nightwatch. Now, it seems we have gotten some details about the darkest of these films, Morbius, The Living Vampire.
Morbius, the living Vampire, first appeared in the Marvel Comics universe in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 back in 1971. Morbius was first featured as one of Spider-Man’s many enemies, but over time he was redeemed and became more of an antihero and was featured in his own comic book series.
That Hashtag Show reportedly reached out to some of their contacts at Sony Pictures to see if there were any updates on the rumored Morbius film. What they got was some details on what they’re looking for in terms of casting and some general details of what the film may look like.
Here’s what they had to say:
“Horror action story of a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transformed himself into a living vampire who, though disgusted by his own bloodlust, chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life.”
The report also gave a brief description of who Sony is looking to cast as the title character, Morbius. Sony is reportedly looking for an unspecified ethnicity male in the age range of early to late 30’s.
In the comics, his true identity was Michael Morbius. A failed biochemist who was imbued with Vampire like abilities and physical traits that stemmed from an experiment gone wrong, which was intended to cure his rare blood disorder. The experiment involved electro shock therapy and Vampire bat DNA and after it failed it afflicted him with “pseudo-vampirism” that mimicked the supernatural powers and the blood-thirst of vampirism.
I for one am stoked to see this character coming to the big screen. A Vampire antihero that can turn others into “pseudo-vampires” as well. He flies. He has super human strength. He’s afflicted with trying to find a cure and satisfying his insatiable blood thirst along with trying to protect the ones he loves. Between battling with his monstrous features and his new found curse if done right I am sure this film could be part of a trilogy and stand on its own apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What’s not to like about this guy?
The Morbius movie is said to be in pre-production with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless penning the script. The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray was reportedly offered the directing job but turned it down. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing.
