Swamp Thing TV Series is coming

With the Justice League Dark movie/series in constant states of development and development hell DC brand streaming service has ordered a script-to-series TV series for SwampThing.

SwampThing is a humanoid/plant elemental creature that has the appearance of a vegetation mass of a creature with the ability of super human strength, ability to camouflage, control certain environments and create vegetation for blockades and whatever is necessary. In some variations he has the ability to fly. Usually human size maybe a little larger he has the ability to grow using vegetation around him.

Swamp Thing has been a DC brand character featured first in 1971 in House of Secrets #92 comic. Even though his outer appearance has changed along with his abilities, his origin has pretty much stayed the same from various comic interpretations to the films of the 80s. The first Swamp Thing movie was also directed by the late great Wes Craven and hit theaters in 1982. Return of the SwampThing , a guilty pleasure of mine, was released in 1989 and didn’t fare as well critically or commercially as its predecessor. There was also a tv show and several appearances in animated series and DC animated films.

Swamp Thing’s history is vast in DC comics. He’s had run ins with the Justice League and John Constantine. Swamp Thing has also been a member of Justice League Dark which included the likes of Constantine, Zatanna, Dead Man and Frankenstein.

At one point, Guillermo Del Toro was attached to helm a Justice League Dark film that would have included Swamp Thing. After departing from the directors chair several other directors have been rumored to direct JLD. Most recently a Justice League Dark animated film was released in 2017 that featured Swamp Thing in a brief appearance. It’s believed the release of this animated film was to see how well it would fare amongst the general audience and how popular these characters actually are.

I am very excited to see any iteration of Swamp Thing especially a series that can do the character justice like Netflix has done for several of Marvel’s comic book characters.

DC brand streaming service is still unavailable at the time but is in the process of adding several features to its line up.

Based on the comics by Ln Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the one-hour Swamp Thing drama will be written by Mark Verheiden (Daredevil, Ash vs. Evil Dead) and Gary Dauberman (It). Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) will write and produce the Titans series alongside Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind).
